Bad Hangover Day!

How is this holiday celebrated?
This holiday is celebrated by "not" drinking that's for sure!
After all last night was New Years Eve and Im sure you had more than you planned to, right?  So today is about getting over a bad hangover by relaxing, resting and trying out all the best "getting over a hangover" ideas you can find.
              What helps with a Hangover?

Origin of this Holiday
Our research did not find the creator, or the origin of this day.
This holiday is referred to as a "National" day.  However, we did not find any congressional records or presidential proclamations for this day. Even though we didn't, this is still a holiday that is publicized to celebrate.
So have fun with it and celebrate it!

What is a hangover?
A hangover (veisalgia) describes the sum of unpleasant physiological effects following heavy consumption of drugs, particularly alcoholic beverages.

The Term Hangover
The term hangover was originally a 19th century expression describing unfinished business—something left over from a meeting—or ‘survival.’ In 1904, the meaning "after-effect of drinking too much" first surfaced.

The most commonly reported characteristics of a hangover include
headache, nausea, sensitivity to light and noise, lethargy, dysphoria, and thirst.

Symptoms of a hangover
An alcohol hangover is associated with a variety of symptoms that may include dehydration, fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, weakness, elevated body temperature, hypersalivation, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, irritability, sensitivity to light and noise, erratic motor functions, trouble sleeping, and lack of depth perception. Many people will also be repulsed by the thought, taste or smell of alcohol during a hangover. The symptoms vary from person to person, and occasion to occasion, usually beginning several hours after drinking. It is not clear whether hangovers directly affect cognitive abilities.[citation needed] In some rare cases, these symptoms can be additive to the point of hospitalization.

How do you get over a hangover?
(Possible remedies found at wikipedia encyclopedia)
There is debate about whether a hangover might be prevented or at least mitigated. There is currently no known proven mechanism for making oneself sober short of waiting for the body to metabolize ingested alcohol, which occurs via oxidation through the liver before alcohol leaves the body. However,

Food and Water: Simple consumption of foods such as eggs, which contain cysteine, and water may be enough to replenish lost moisture and at least rehydrate the body, making a hangover shorter.

Milk, water and orange juice. The Calcium, re-hydration properties, and vitamin C contained in each product respectively is found to combat the symptoms of a hangover if taken shortly after consumption. Milk is also a dietary source of cysteine.

More Alcohol: This is sometimes said as a temporary remedy, or at least delays the time when you have to face sobering. also see Hair of the dog

According to a recent study a possible cure for a hangover is RU-21 supplement. "The Claim: It slows down the creation of a nasty by-product -- the one that causes headaches and nausea -- while speeding up the destruction of others." AOL Health

Sodium bicarbonate; A slightly heaped teaspoon of baking soda suspended in a glass of water when consumed deals very effectively with the nausea, and indirectly with 'the shakes' associated with a hangover.

Exercise: It is known that exercise after heavy intoxication helps the heart pump blood around the body and increases the amount of oxygen in the body. A light jog may alleviate hangover symptoms.

Magnesium: It is well studied that excessive alcohol consumption can lead to a magnesium deficiency, or reduce levels of magnesium, as well as depleting zinc and other minerals. Individuals with lower magnesium levels may experience more severe hangovers.

Vitamin B1 (thiamine): there are claims that apart from helping prevent Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, thiamine supplements may substantially enhance the activity of alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase and so prevent a build up of glutamate and hence GABA in the cerebellum of the brain (thus reducing some symptoms of hangovers).

Vitamin B6 (pyritinol): Some studies have found large doses of Vitamin B6 (several hundred times the recommended daily intake) to reduce hangovers.

"A four page literature review in British Medical Journal on hangover cures by Max Pittler of the Peninsula Medical School at Exeter University and colleagues concludes: "No compelling evidence exists to suggest that any conventional or complementary intervention is effective for preventing or treating alcohol hangover." "The most effective way to avoid the symptoms of alcohol induced hangover is to avoid drinking."
