The best-laid plans oft go awry, as the saying goes. Imagine you wake up one morning and realize that you forgot to get the Halloween costume for your child or children. Do not panic! Or perhaps you thought that this year you did not have to worry about it because there are no big plans and then your child gets invited to a party and there are no costumes in the right size left at the store. Yikes! Again, don't panic.

Instead of panicking, create a last-minute costume for your child. How? Start by considering clothing your child already owns that can be used for this purpose. For example, a leotard with tights is very versatile. Brown sweats can become a bear or tree or a blanket can become a cape. Even a pillow case can be used to form a basic body cover that can be painted or have designs added. There's always the traditional white bedsheet to transform into a ghost outfit or skeleton. Belt it and make it a medieval king or knight. You might also look around your closets or house for other basic ingredients of a special costume: scarves, belts, gloves, hats, etc. Maybe there are old costumes that you can cut up and use pieces to make a new one.
Then turn to creating a mask. Find some online and print them out. You can either cut them out right away and decorate or decorate first and then cut them out, depending upon how fancy your mask is. Use glitter, sequins, feathers, fake fur, plain color (or plain old Zorro black). Paint it in bright colors or shapes. Remember to cut out the eye and nose holes. Fasten the sides with a rubber band or a piece of string.
Alternatively, make a mask out of a plain paper bag. Start with a bag that is comfortable and allows for easy breathing and clear vision. Place the bag over your child's head and put marks where the eyes and mouth are. Take off the bag and cut out those marked spots. Then comes the fun. Decorate the mask with all those bits and pieces mentioned above (glitter, feathers, etc.). Draw a scary or angry or funny expression on it. Put a wig over it or glue straggly "hair" on top or place a mustache above the mouth hole. The only limit is your imagination.
So, instead of panicking and perhaps being stuck paying a lot for a costume because it is the last minute, do some brainstorming and get creative. You and your kids will not only appreciate the final result, but will enjoy yourselves even more while designing and working together to make a unique and special costume.
