What is Potpourri?
Potpourri can be dry or wet.  Dry potpourri is an assortment of dried herbs and dried flowers that are placed in pretty dishes located somewhere in your room.  They are very popular placed in bathrooms.  Many times the dried assortment is infused with essential oils as well.  Potpourri is used to freshen up the smell of any room and make it feel inviting and clean.

Simmering Potpourri
Is company on their way over and you house does not smell as good as you would like it to?  Here's an easy and quick way to get the house smelling really homey in a snap.  All kitchen have cinnamon in their cabinets so this is an excellent spice for a simmering potpourri.

Take 1 tablespoon or more of ground cinnamon in a pan of simmering water and keep adding water as it boils away.  Turn the fans on in the house to try and disperse the smells all around very quickly before your company gets there.  If you have orange juice in your frig. or even any apple cider then you can use these as variations as well.  Just take 1 cup of apple cider or orange juice added to the water, and ground cloves instead of or in addition to the ground cinnamon.  It's that simple.  Many Realtors use this trick when showing a house.   It use to be fresh baked cookies but who has time for that right.

If you have any bottles of essential oils laying around the house; then another really fast way to get the house smelling nice is to drop a few drops on a cool light bulb.  Yes I said coooool light bulb because if the light is already hot then the bulb could burst.  When you turn the light on... as the oil heats up it will fill the room with the lovely scent.

Sachets in the Window Sills
At our house we like to place cloth sachets on each of the window sills.  When the sun hits each window during the day it floods that room with a light smell.  When the smell goes away you just add a few more drops of essential fragrance oil to it again.

Winter Blues
In the winter time because we heat our homes, it tends to dry out the air a whole lot.  Dry air leads to sinus problems and dry skin.  In order to help with this you can put a pot of water on top of your (wood heater if you have one) and add a few drops of fragrance oil in it.
