"Our goal is to give you a better understanding of holidays around the world that's celebrated on this date. Use our list as a guide for your classroom or better yet; a way to find new holidays and traditions for your own family. Keep in mind... this list is incomplete. Movable holidays may not be listed due to the fact the dates change. "

Food Holidays for this date:

  • National Orange Blossom Day (June 27)
On this day we are encouraged to learn about this beautiful fragrant flower and the many ways we take advantage of it's beauty. In the United States, orange flower water is used to make orange blossom scones and marshmallows. ~Orange blossom honey (citrus honey) is produced by putting beehives in the citrus groves during blooming period. This also pollinates seeded citrus varieties. Orange blossom honey is highly prized and tastes much like the fruit.

Holidays Around the World for this date:

  • Armed Forces Day, formerly Veterans' Day (United Kingdom) (June 27)
Armed Forces Day (formerly Veterans' Day) in the United Kingdom is an annual event celebrated in late June to commemorate the service of men and women in the British Armed Forces. Veterans' Day was first observed in 2006. Although an official event, it is not a public holiday in the UK. The name was changed to Armed Forces Day in 2009. The four Armed Forces Days so far have been held on the last Saturday of June. Armed Forces Day has its own official Facebook page

  • Canadian Multiculturalism Day (Canada)
Public holidays in Canada, known as "statutory holidays", "stat holidays", or simply "stats", are legislated at the national, provincial and territorial levels. Many of these holidays are observed nationwide, but each province and territory has its own holidays as well.

  • Helen Keller Day (United States)
Helen Keller Day is a commemorative holiday honoring Helen Keller as authorized by President Jimmy Carter in the year 1980, her 100th birthday. The holiday is celebrated on June 27 per the presidential proclamation. According to the Scranton City Paper, the holiday has been used as a fund-raiser by the Lackawanna Branch of the Pennsylvania Association for the Blind in Scranton, Pennsylvania in Helen Keller's honor. According to the Reading Eagle, a newspaper based out of Reading, Pennsylvania, "... Helen Keller Day will be honored by Pennsylvania on June 27th..." as declared by then Pennsylvania Governor Scranton on "... her 86th birthday."

  • Day of Turkmen Workers of Culture and Art (Turkmenistan)
(Introduced in 2009) Public holidays in Turkmenistan fall into three main categories: (a) holidays commemorating historical events (b) traditional and religious holidays (c) new holidays introduced to honor and reinforce cultural traditions of the Turkmen people).

  • Independence Day, celebrates the independence of Djibouti from France in 1977
An Independence Day is an annual event commemorating the anniversary of a nation's assumption of independent statehood, usually after ceasing to be a group or part of another nation or state; more rarely after the end of a military occupation. Most countries observe their respective independence days as a national holiday, and in some cases the observance date is controversial or contested.

  • Mixed Race Day (Brazil)
Mixed Race Day is celebrated on June 27 in Brazil, as a reference to the twenty-seven mixed-race representatives elected during the 1st Conference for the Promotion of Racial Equality, which occurred in the city of Manaus, State of Amazonas, Brazil, from April 7 to 9, 2005. ~ Mixed Race Day honors all those who possess multi-ethnic origins. It occurs three days after the Day of the Caboclo, honoring the first mixed-race Brazilian group (people of European and Amerindian ancestry).

  • National HIV Testing Day (United States)
For National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) on June 27, 2010, AIDS.gov worked with HUD's Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS Program, SAMHSA's Center for Mental Health Services, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the CDC, and others to develop the HIV/AIDS Prevention & Service Provider Locator. By entering a location (ZIP code, city and state), an individual can locate nearby prevention, housing, mental health, substance abuse, testing, and treatment services. The locator is a widget that allows organizations and individuals to share the locator on their own blog or website.

  • National Unity Day (Tajikistan)

  • Seven Sleepers Day or Siebenschläfertag (Germany)
In Germany, June 27 is Siebenschläfertag (Seven Sleepers Day). The weather on that day is supposed to determine the average weather of the next seven weeks. This is one of the most well-known bits of traditional farmers' weather lore remaining in today's Germany, but quite inaccurate in practice.
While it might seem that the name of the day refers to the Edible Dormouse (Glis glis), a rodent known as Siebenschläfer in German, it actually commemorates the Seven Sleepers legend. Objections have been raised that the weather lore associated with the day might have arisen before the Gregorian reform, and as at this time the difference to the Julian calendar amounted to ten days, July 7 would be the actual Seven Sleepers Day. Based on this date the prediction has a slightly increased probability, if confined to the southern parts of Germany not affected by the jet stream, where the rule seems to have originated.

  • Festival in honor of Lares (Roman Empire)

A Holiday is
a day set aside by custom or by law in which normal activities, especially business or work, are to be suspended or reduced.

Generally holidays are intended to allow individuals to celebrate or commemorate something of cultural or religious significance.

Holidays may be designated by governments, religious institutions, or other groups or organizations. The degree to which normal activities are reduced by a holiday may depend on local laws, customs, or even personal choices.
