Definition of a sandwich

A sandwich is a food item made of two or more slices of leavened bread with one or more layers of filling, typically meat or cheese, with the addition of vegetables or salad. The bread can be used as is, or it can be coated with butter, oil, mustard or other condiments to enhance flavor and texture. In North American usage, sandwich may also refer to what is more commonly referred to in the rest of the world as a hamburger.

List of Sandwiches

► A breakfast sandwich is a type of sandwich, which is made with two slices of bread cut or obtained from a loaf with a variety of fillings. Breakfast sandwiches are served for breakfast at fast food restaurants and delicatessens or bought as fast, ready to heat and eat sandwiches from a store. Breakfast sandwiches can also be made from scratch in the home.

► Bun Kebab is a Pakistani sandwich, originating from Karachi. It is usually found in road side stalls and in restaurants all across Karachi, most famous ones being in Pakistan Chawk. It is usually eaten along with a soft drink or by itself. Bun Kebab consists of a spicy patty which is shallow-fried, onions, and chutney or raita in a hamburger or hot dog bun.

Unlike a hamburger patty, the bun kebab is mixed with ground lentils, powdered cumin seeds, and an egg batter into a mixture which is then fried in ghee or oil. One may find bun kabab at vendor stalls throughout Pakistan, with regional differences evident. In the Punjab (notably Lahore and Islamabad) a 'Bun Kabab' is served with a fried egg or omelette and Pakistani ketchup, a cheap alternative to regular ketchup made with colourings, sugar, some tomato and spices.

► Bulgher Burger: A Bulghur Burger is a tasty vegetarian patty for use in sandwiches.

► Cemita: is a sandwich originally from Puebla, Mexico. The name refers to the bread roll it is served on as well. The cemita, also known as cemita poblana, derives from the city (and region) of Puebla. The word refers to the sandwich as well as to the roll it is typically served on, a bread roll covered with sesame seeds. The bread is made with egg, and resembles brioche.[3] Additionally, the ingredients usually are restricted to sliced avocado, meat, white cheese, onions and red sauce (salsa roja). In modern times it has appeared on the streets of New York, Los Angeles, and other cities with Mexican food vendors.

The most popular meat in a cemita is beef milanesa, a thinly pounded and deep-fried piece of beef. Cueritos (pickled pig skin), queso de puerco (pork head cheese), and carnitas (stewed pork) are also popular. The cheese is often panela, a bland white cheese with the consistency of fresh mozzarella. Quesillo, a Mexican string cheese, is also used.

► Cheese sandwich: is a basic sandwich made generally with one or more varieties of cheese on any sort of bread. In addition to the cheese, it may also include meats, vegetables and/or condiments. Cheese sandwiches can be uncooked, or heated so that the bread toasts and the cheese melts (a dish referred to as a grilled cheese sandwich, toasted cheese, cheese toastie or simply grilled cheese).

Cheese sandwiches with added meat (such as ham, bacon, turkey and other meats) are generally referred to by more specific names. If ham is included, for example, the result is a "ham and cheese sandwich".

► Chicken salad: is any salad that comprises chicken as a main ingredient. Other common ingredients may include mayonnaise, hard-boiled egg, celery, onion, pepper, pickles and a variety of mustards.

In the United States, "chicken salad" refers to either any salad with chicken, or a specific mixed salad consisting primarily of chopped chicken meat and a binder, such as mayonnaise or salad dressing. Like tuna salad and egg salad, it may be served on top of lettuce, tomato, avocado, or some combination of these. It may also be used for sandwiches. Typically it is made with leftover or canned chicken. It may also refer to a garden salad with fried, grilled, or roasted chicken (usually cut up) on top.

► Chivito: is the name of a sandwich-style national dish in Uruguay, and consists primarily of a thin slice of filet mignon (churrasco beef), with mozzarella, tomatoes, mayonnaise, black or green olives, and commonly also bacon, fried or hard-boiled eggs and ham. It is served in a bun, often with a side of French fries. Other ingredients might be added into the sandwich such as red beets, peas, grilled or pan-fried red peppers, and slices of cucumber.

► Club Sandwich: A club sandwich, also called a clubhouse sandwich, is a type of sandwich, most often served as a double-decker. It is usually cut into quarters, and held together by cocktail sticks, either frilly or plain. The traditional club ingredients are turkey, bacon, lettuce, and tomato. As with a BLT sandwich, the club sandwich is usually served on toasted bread, but untoasted bread can be used. Ham is sometimes substituted for bacon, and chicken sometimes for turkey. Mayonnaise is a common condiment, but honey mustard is sometimes used. Cheese is often added to the sandwich as well, usually Swiss, American, or Cheddar.

► Cheesesteak: The cheesesteak, known outside the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area as the Philadelphia cheesesteak, Philly Steak and Cheese, Philly cheesesteak, steak and cheese, or simply a Philly is a sandwich principally made up of thinly sliced pieces of steak and melted cheese on a long roll. A cheesesteak without cheese is locally called a steak sandwich, or a Philly Steak in other parts of the country.
