Article: What to do with all this Halloween Candy
by Meghan E Witham

Halloween is almost here which means that soon your child will come home from school parties and trick or treating with bags full of candy and other treats. And after the fun is over and the costumes go back in the closet, the problem now becomes what to do with all of the leftover candy??

While candy and other treats are fine for children on special occasions, no child needs to eat five pounds of Halloween candy all at once. A word of advice many parents follow: let them have a few extra pieces of candy the night of Halloween, but then set limits to what they can have each day after that. Surely there will be extra candy! Also, it can be a good idea to keep the candy stash out of sight because most often your kids will forget that it is even there after a few days. Teaching your child not to gorge on large amounts of candy can help to establish healthy habits and help them to understand portion control when it comes to sugary foods.

To help you get some ideas on what to do with all the candy that is about to come into your home, here is a list of things that you and your child can do together with the candy to spread out its enjoyment. Hint: You don't have to keep it all!

  • Freeze it to use in treats and recipes later in the year; extra candy can be used in things like milkshakes, cookie dough, and in cakes. As long as they are still in the package, most Halloween treats have a lengthy freezer life.

  • Use it to make a homemade trail mix. Just a little bit of candy tossed in a healthy bag of dried fruit and nuts can make a great snack for kids, and for parents.

  • Keep a stash for those moments when you are in need of a small sugar fix. Just because the kids collected it all does not mean they are entitled to every last Reece's or package of M&Ms.

  • Save some of the candy to use to decorate a gingerbread house. After Halloween quickly comes the Holiday season and you may find that your extra candy makes for a perfect holiday decoration.

  • Take some of it to work with you to share with your co-workers. Perhaps you work with some people who do not have children and so they have missed out on the massive influx of candy. Share the wealth!

  • Help your child send some of their candy overseas to give to our troops. There are many organizations and ways to send care packages overseas and what a better way to celebrate the holiday season than offering a member of our forces a sweet treat.

  • Donate the candy to children in need like a local hospital, shelter or food pantry. This is a great way to teach your little one's the practice of giving.

We hope that some of these ideas will help both you and your child have a fun Halloween while not overdosing on sugary treats!
