What type of holiday is this?
This holiday is refered to as an Unofficial Holiday. This holiday has become likened to a de facto U.S. national holiday. (which means "of the fact" or "in practice" but not ordained by law.)

Second Largest Day of Food Consumption
Super Bowl Sunday is the second-largest day of food consumption after Thanksgiving. Much of this food is consumed at parties where people watch the Super Bowl.

"The Big Party"
Super Bowl Day is not only a sporting event but it's a food event as well!  Big Parties will be taking place all over the US on this day. Everything from BBQ grilling outside to tail-gate parties at the game, to pre game in-house parties....  see see Tailgating for party ideas and recipes.

"The Big Game"
Everybody looks forward to NFL Football.  The Big Super Bowl game will be the #1 watched program for the day.  Thousands of people will be at the game and millions of people will watch the game on TV. Even those people who don't like football at all will watch the Super Bowl Game just to be able to see the great TV commercial that you can only see one time a year and only during the super bowl game.  Who will be the best football team in the world? We can't hardly wait to find out.

The championship game of the NFL
In professional American football, the Super Bowl is the championship game of the National Football League (NFL). The game and its ancillary festivities constitute Super Bowl Sunday. Over the years it has become the most-watched U.S. television broadcast of the year. In addition, many popular singers and musicians have performed during the Super Bowl's pre-game and halftime ceremonies. Super Bowl Sunday is the second-largest U.S. food consumption day, following Thanksgiving.

The Super Bowl was first played on:
January 15, 1967 as part of an agreement between the NFL and its younger rival, the American Football League (AFL) in which each league's championship team would play each other in an "AFL-NFL World Championship Game". After the leagues merged in 1970, the Super Bowl became the NFL's championship game, played between the champions of the league's two conferences: the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC).  see Super Bowl History for more information.

Roman numerals to identify each game
Since the NFL season extends into the New Year, the Super Bowl uses Roman numerals to identify each game, rather than the year it was held. For example, Super Bowl XLII, played in February 2008, was actually part of the 2007 season.

The Green Bay Packers won the first two Super Bowls
defeating the Kansas City Chiefs and the Oakland Raiders. The Packers were led by quarterback Bart Starr, who was named MVP for both games. These two championships, along with the Packers' NFL championships in 1961, 1962, and 1965 have led many people to consider the Packers to be the "Team of the 1960s." Green Bay, Wisconsin is often referred to as "Title Town" by its own residents due to the five championships the Packers won in the 1960s and its twelve championships since the team began playing in 1919.  see complete list of all Super Bowl Winners.

Is National Popcorn Day Super Bowl Sunday?
This Holiday is a matter of debate. Some resources say that National Popcorn day is celebrated at the end of January. Other sources report it as January 19; others claim it takes place on whatever day the Super Bowl falls on because popcorn is the number 1 snack food for the game and more popcorn is eaten during this day than any other time of the year. Popcorn sales sky rocket, starting the week before game time.

"The connection to the Super Bowl seems natural enough. It’s a highly regarded annual sporting competition pitting the top two national football teams against each other. Millions of viewers from around the globe hunker down with bowls of their favorite snack—popcorn—in heated anticipation of who will win the battle." says popcorn.org  (National Popcorn Month is in October - Caramel Popcorn Day" is April 7th.)

• It's the second-largest day of food consumption after Thanksgiving so don't hold back on the food.

• Everyone expects to pig out so don't be surprised if guests lick the platters clean.

• Everyone drinks on this holiday so if your hosting a nonalcoholic party you need to take the time to pass on the information.

• If your hosting a game party remember rival arguments may occur. Assign a referee just in case.
