  Weird March Holidays!
What's the first thing you think of when you hear the word "March"? Many of us think about Mardi Gras, St. Patrick's Day & Easter. Now those are great holidays but when it comes to weird, wild & wacky; they just don't hold a candle to the offbeat holidays we celebrate in March. March has some great reasons to party!

Starting Out the month:
Let me start out by saying "March is a month long enjoyment of upper lip hair." What am I talking about you ask? March is "Moustache March or Mustache March" in the United States. "In North America and the UK, many groups of men (co-workers, friends, and students) sometimes partake in moustache growing competitions. The ultimate goal is to grow the most full and well-groomed moustache in the least amount of time, or over a fixed period."

"In more serious competitions, the moustaches are seen as a symbol of male virility and the winner is usually seen as the most manly of the competitors. Some competitions are run as charity fund-raising events, with participants being sponsored for their moustache-growing and the money raised being donated to a selected cause. The rules for such competitions vary, but often include "forfeits" (eg donation-matching) for competitors who shave off their moustaches before the end of the competition."

The idea stems from an early Air Force tradition in which members of the Air Force would grow mustaches against facial hair regulations during the month of March. It is common in Santa Barbara, California.
Related Holiday: Movember - a charity event held each year in November. It aims to promote and raise           awareness of Men's Health issues, notably prostate cancer.

More Weird Holidays for March? Yep we have them!
March 1st get's the ball rolling with Middle Name Pride Day" which occurs in March on the Friday of Celebrate Your Name Week which takes place the first full week of March. On this very same day we celebrate "Plan a Solo Vacation Day" and "Refired, Not Retired Day". Now that's not the end of weird celebrations for the first day of March. Nope, not by a long shot. In fact we also celebrate two of the biggest party themes there is for the month and that's "Beer Day" and National Pig Day

Whuppity Scoorie: is a traditional festival dating from the early 19th century observed by people in Lanark,     Scotland on March 1 to celebrate the approach of spring. The Community Council also hosts a "Whuppity     Scoorie Storytelling Festival" and art workshops after the event until March 7.

Buzzard Day: The Hinckley township became known across Ohio and the United States as the home of the buzzards. On March 15 of every year, buzzards arrive in large flocks at the town, as if on a very exact biological clock. The town began celebrating the arrival of the birds in 1957, and today as many as 50,000 visitors visit the Hinckley Reservation in the town annually on "Buzzard Day" to witness the return of the avian residents. The event is used to mark the beginning of spring for Hinckley and the surrounding towns.
