Reception:  A reception is a style of party that is well suited to receiving many guests. The hosts and any guests of honor form a receiving line in order of precedence near the entrance. They greet each guest in turn as he or she arrives. Each guest greets the first person in the line (who, of course, is the person of lowest precedence). The first person then introduces the guest to the next person in the line and turns to the next guest. Each guest properly speaks little more than his name (if necessary) and a conventional greeting or congratulation to each person in the receiving line. Thus the reception progresses steadily without unnecessary delay. After formally receiving each guest in this fashion, the hosts may mingle with the guests.

Refreshments at a reception may be as minimal as coffee or lemonade, or as elaborate as those at a state dinner. Receptions are popular for large events such as holiday events at the White House.

Surprise Party:  A surprise party is a party that is not made known beforehand to the person in whose honor it is being held. - Birthday surprise parties are the most common kind of surprise party. At most such parties, the guests will arrive an hour or so before the honored person arrives. Often, a friend in on the surprise will lead the honored person to the location of the party without letting on anything.

The guests might even conceal themselves from view, and when the honored person enters the room, they leap from hiding and all shout, "Surprise!" For some surprise birthday parties, it is considered to be a good tactic to shock the honored person. Streamers, silly string, and balloons may be used for this purpose. Evidence of a party, such as decorations and balloons, are not made visible from the exterior of the home, so that the honored person will suspect nothing.

A sex party is a gathering at which sexual activity takes place. Sex parties may be organized to enable people to engage in sexual activity or for swingers or people interested in group sex to meet, but any gathering where sexual activity is anticipated can be called a sex party. - Sex parties, under various names, have been a common focus of moral panics fed by media reports claiming that such parties are prevalent, or growing in prevalence, especially among teenagers. Other types of sex parties: swinging party, key party, orgy, rainbow party.

A sex toy party is a usually female-only gathering where participants learn about and buy sex toys. It is a type of party plan, similar to Tupperware parties. The party may start with an icebreaker game, then a sex toy representative, or 'facilitator', displays and discusses the products.

A woman was arrested in Texas in December 2003 on obscenity charges for hosting a sex toy party for undercover narcotics officers, but the case was dismissed by the judge in July 2004.

Sleepover: A sleepover, also known as a pajama party or a slumber party, is a party most commonly held by children or teenagers, where a guest or guests are invited to stay overnight at the home of a friend, sometimes to celebrate birthdays or other special events. A lock-in is a similar event held in a setting other than a private home, such as a school or church. Typical participant activities include staying up late, talking, eating and playing until falling asleep, which sometimes never happens for a few high energy guests.

Stop Light Party: Usually, the color green means that one is single and looking for a relationship. Red means that one is currently in a relationship, or not looking for one.[2] Yellow may mean "unsure" or "maybe," or could mean that one is in a relationship but still open to advances[3] The purpose of a stop light party is to decrease the apprehension associated with approaching potential mates at parties. It also serves the purpose of providing an easy indicator of one's unavailability to fend off unwelcome advances.

Variations: Guests at a stop light party might wear different-colored shirts based on sexual orientation. White shirts are often bisexual or gay, or incorporate stop light colors into their apparel.[

Subway Party:  A subway party is a celebration that occurs on a mass transit system. Generally, people meet at a predetermined station in their city's mass transit system, wait until their numbers have achieved critical mass, and board the train. From there, revelers may engage in many different activities, from playing music and dancing to exchanging gifts.

There are several kinds of subway parties, the two most distinct being the rush hour subway party and the late night subway party.

Singles dance party and mixer:  A singles dance party and mixer is a party which is organized for people who are not married and who want to find a partner for friendship, dating, or sex.
- Usually a “mixer game” is played, to make it easy for people to meet each other. For example, each guest may be given a card with an inspiring quotation on it. The game is to find someone of the opposite sex who has the same quotation. Couples who have matching cards may be given a small prize. - These parties are sponsored by various organizations, both non-profit and for-profit.

Sweet 16 Birthday Party: A sweet sixteen party is a type of birthday party in the United States celebrating a sixteenth birthday, Sweet sixteen parties mark a coming of age. A sweet sixteen, like a wedding, can be extremely formal, casual, or semi-formal. Sweet sixteens can range from modest parties at home with close family to large affairs with a hired DJ, makeup and hair stylists, yachts and hotel ballrooms.

For females the shoe ceremony is common at sweet sixteen parties, although they are more often seen in Quinceañeras.[citation needed] In this ceremony, the birthday girl sits down in a chair while her grandfather, uncle, godfather, or father approaches her with high heels on a decorative pillow. The girl would traditionally be wearing flat shoes, such as slippers, and the father ceremoniously helps her into her new high heels. This is symbolic of the girl transitioning into a woman.

Tailgate Party:  In the United States, a tailgate party is a social event held on and around the open tailgate of a vehicle. Tailgating often involves consuming alcoholic beverages and grilling food. This is done in order for people to loosen up and have fun before entering the event and also to avoid paying stadium prices for alcohol and food.

Tea Party:  A tea party is a formal, ritualized gathering for afternoon tea. - Formal tea parties are often characterized by the use of prestige utensils, such as bone china or silver. The table is made to look its prettiest, with cloth napkins and matching cups and plates. In addition to tea, larger parties may provide punch, or in cold weather, hot chocolate. The tea is accompanied by a variety of easily managed foods: thin sandwiches, (tea sandwiches) such as cucumber or tomato, cake slices, buns or rolls, and cookies are all common. (tea sandwich recipes)

Toga party: A party in which all participants dress up in Greek-style robes with holly on their heads, and generally get very drunk. This theme was popularized by the movie Animal House.

A wedding reception is a party held after the completion of a marriage ceremony. It is held as hospitality for those who have attended the wedding, hence the name reception: the couple receives society, in the form of family and friends, for the first time as a married couple. Hosts provide their choice of food and drink, although a wedding cake is popular. Entertaining guests after a wedding ceremony is traditional in most societies, and can last anywhere from half an hour to many hours or even days.

Welcome party:  A welcome party is held for the purpose of welcoming a newcomer, such as a new club member, a new employee, or a family's new baby.
